Take Up Space

Nobody told me my story was the strategy — maybe no one told you either

Strategy

I didn’t actually give two thoughts to story-led branding until it saved my own brand.

In fact, in the beginning I was operating on advice I had learned years ago that your brand shouldn’t be about you at all. I suspect other women business owners have heard the same thing too.

I was 39. Former stay-at-home mom of 10 years. A career on the back burner while I followed my husband’s military assignments and kept everyone else’s life running. When I finally decided to build something for myself, I was terrified. How was I going to compete with designers who were younger, hipper, and had years of client work I didn’t?

I chased what I thought I was “supposed” to sound like.
What I assumed clients would expect from me.
What looked “right.”

I built on shoddy strategy, vibes, and crossed fingers.

It’s no surprise that nothing I created felt right. Because it wasn’t.
I was faking it (hoping to make it) instead of just building from who I actually am.

Eventually I scrapped all of it and started over — this time strategy first, everything else second.

Your story is the strategy

How did my path — global travel, corporate and government jobs, yoga teaching, interior decorating, military life, Japan — shape the way I see branding? What do I actually believe about how brands should be built? How do I communicate when I’m not trying to impress anyone? What do I want my clients to feel when we work together? What is the core mission that brings everything together?

Once I did that work honestly, everything else fell into place.
How I wanted to operate became clear. The words came easier. The visual direction became obvious.
My imposter syndrome didn’t disappear, but it moved out of the spotlight.

Here’s what I know now that I wish I’d known then: your story is not baggage.
It’s not a liability you have to work around or a gap you need to apologize for.
It’s the perspective that shapes everything you do.
It’s what makes you like no other in your category.
Editing yourself out leaves a gap that no logo can ever fill.

When your brand embodies your story, the difference shows.
Your words resonate because they come from a place of truth.
Your visuals last because they aren’t based on trends.
Your dream audience can finally find their way to you because the path is clear.

Your point of view. Your winding path. The stuff you assume nobody cares about.
That’s the root of your brand.

Where does your brand stand?

If you’re not sure whether your brand is telling your story or someone else’s, it’s worth finding out before you spend another minute tweaking things on the surface.

Good news: you don’t have to figure that out alone. I made a brand audit quiz that does exactly this.
Eight questions. Immediate feedback on where your brand stands.
Prompts to sit with or journal about. Action steps you can take right now.

Your story got you here. It’ll take you further than you think.
